SURABAYA, September 13, 2024. In an effort to promote the implementation of good governance and prevent data security crimes, PT Bank Pembangunan Daerah Jawa Timur Tbk (bankjatim) held a panel discussion with the East Java Regional State Intelligence Agency (BIN) on Friday (13/9). The event, held at the Bromo Room of Bank Jatim’s Head Office, featured Brigadier General Pol. Rudy Tranggono, S.ST., M.K, Head of the East Java Intelligence Agency, as the speaker. The discussion was attended by the entire board of directors, SEVPs, vice presidents, AVPs, branch leaders, and all Jatimers, both online and in person.

In his opening speech, Bank Jatim President Director Busrul Iman emphasized that as a banking institution, bankjatim is obligated to consistently implement good governance to sustain business growth amidst existing challenges. “Currently, bankjatim has obtained ISO 27001:2022 Certification for International Standard Information Security Management Systems,” he stated.

Busrul added that the international security standard helps bankjatim build and implement a comprehensive information security management system covering policy and governance, human resources, technology, and active management roles. This demonstrates bankjatim's commitment to continuously enhancing the quality of information security.

“We hope today’s panel discussion with East Java BIN will enrich the knowledge of Jatimers in good governance and data security crime prevention. We also hope Jatimers will increasingly prioritize prudence in mitigating potential risks in banking operations,” Busrul said. Bankjatim plans to collaborate further with East Java BIN institutionally to address cybercrime and other strategic policies.

Brig. Gen. Rudy Tranggono explained that companies face many challenges in achieving good governance, including human resources, politicization, societal characteristics, regulations, bureaucracy, and low responsiveness. “If good governance is implemented in the banking world, the benefits are substantial, such as improving banking reputation, financial stability, performance and contribution, sustainability, and maximizing value,” he said.

According to Rudy, a good bank is one that delivers optimal service, responds quickly, and provides the best financial management solutions. To achieve good governance, transparency, regulatory compliance, risk management, oversight and control, human resource development, and legal certainty must be balanced.

Regarding cybercrime, Rudy noted that in the first half of 2024, there were 2.5 billion cyberattacks targeting Indonesia — approximately 158 attacks per second. This marked a sharp increase of 619.95% compared to the same period last year. A major contributing factor was the 2024 General Election, which involved massive amounts of public data.

“If cybercrime strikes the banking sector, the impact would be severe — financial loss, reputational damage, operational disruption, cross-bank contamination, and legal consequences,” Rudy warned. Therefore, it’s crucial to take early preventive measures, adopt advanced security technologies, enforce strict security protocols, regularly monitor network activity, detect anomalies, and raise awareness about data security threats and countermeasures.

Rudy recommended that to protect against data crime, banks should prioritize cybersecurity at the management level, encourage inter-agency collaboration, form special joint incident response teams, hire professional cybersecurity personnel, foster a culture of cyber awareness, and conduct ongoing IT training and upgrades. “We are also ready to synergize with bankjatim to realize good governance and prevent cybercrime,” he concluded.
