SURABAYA, September 17, 2024. The revitalization of Alun-Alun Merdeka in Malang City, a form of synergy between bankjatim and the Malang City Government, is still ongoing. As of now, the project has passed various stages, including planning by consultants and technical teams, as well as the procurement of supervisory consultants and project vendors. Bankjatim is committed to continuing its efforts to accelerate the process through intensive communication with relevant stakeholders.

The process is taking some time due to the need for coordination and consultation with various community elements regarding the revitalization to ensure it meets the aesthetic and public expectations. This is being done to make Alun-Alun Merdeka the center of activity and a public space that the people of Malang can be proud of, in line with cultural values and the desires of the city's community.

Bankjatim's Corporate Secretary, Wioga Adhiarma Aji, explained that the revitalization, funded by bankjatim’s promotional budget of around IDR 6 billion, is part of the initiative to add value to the assets, facilities, and functions of Alun-Alun Merdeka as previously agreed. It also serves as a form of synergy between bankjatim, the government, and the people of Malang City.

According to Wioga, the revitalization of Alun-Alun Merdeka, which is a public open space, is expected to enhance its beauty and increase its appeal to both locals and visitors coming to Malang City, further strengthening its status as an iconic landmark.

The revitalization plans include several aspects, such as adding garden lights, more seating, fountain improvements, additional flowers, and expanding the playground area. “We hope that this square will not only serve as a public activity space but also become a digital hub. For instance, parking fee payments could be made using a digital app, as well as other financial transactions,” he said.

Wioga also emphasized that the current phase of the revitalization, which involves the procurement of implementation vendors, is expected to not only create a magnificent tourist attraction but also contribute positively to the local economy. “Of course, together with the Malang City Government, we are keen on ensuring that the revitalization does not diminish the essence and important values of Alun-Alun Merdeka. We hope that, after the revitalization, it will further enhance the existing values. We hope everything goes smoothly and can contribute positively to Malang City and East Java,” he added.

The Acting Mayor of Malang recently also shared that in the effort to revitalize Alun-Alun Merdeka, the Malang City Government is not just focusing on beautifying the square. They are also emphasizing the historical aspect of the entire area surrounding Alun-Alun Merdeka, which is an integral part of Malang’s development.

Looking at the area, including Kayutangan Heritage, Alun-Alun Bundar, Alun-Alun Merdeka, Masjid Jami’, Gereja Imanuel, and the Malang Regency Pavilion, they form an interconnected unit. “We hope that there will be synergy and functional relationships between them. With this revitalization, we believe it can make the entire area a source of pride for Malang City,” he explained.
